Washington State Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program Goals:

  • Prevent youth from beginning to use tobacco products
    • The average age a person begins using tobacco products is 13
    • 45 Washington youth start smoking everyday. (that is 16,425 every year)
  • Help youth and adults quit
    • Washington has it's own tobacco quitline 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669)  And at the web site: www.quitline.com
    • The American Lung Association offers a variety of quitting options - check out www.lungusa.org to learn more
  • Eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke
    • SmokeFreeWashington.com
    • Less than 16% of the population in WA smoke.
    • "On November 8th 2005, the voters passed I-901 making Washington a smoke-free state. The Law went into effect on December 8th 2005, banning smoking in all public places, places of employment and 25 feet from all doors, windows that open and ventilation intakes."   • Reduce tobacco use in high-risk groups
    • Education to groups targeted by the Tobacco Companies
